Abstract
Student mental health concerns have become a national emergency (American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Children’s Hospital Association, 2021). Data collected in a school in a large suburban school district in the southeastern portion of the United States was indicative of increased social-emotional/behavioral referrals to Response to Intervention (RTI), Section 504, and Special Education. In addition, African American students were referred to these processes, as well as for office discipline referrals (ODRs), at a disproportionate rate. Current research on the mental health challenges experienced by school-aged children, the impacts on future outcomes, and school-based solutions were reviewed. Comprehensive School Mental Health Systems (CSMHS) were found to be an effective solution to this problem of practice and an implementation plan was developed to address student mental health.
