Abstract
Students with learning disabilities often face significant academic and emotional challenges, yet mental health supports are rarely integrated into the special education evaluation process. At Anonymous High School, the absence of systematic mental health screenings and the limited inclusion of mental health goals in Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) contribute to poor student outcomes, particularly for historically marginalized populations. This capstone project proposes a comprehensive framework for embedding mental health services within the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and special education processes to ensure students receive both academic and emotional interventions.
Through structured professional development, tiered interventions, and community partnerships, this initiative establishes standardized mental health screening protocols, enhances educator capacity, and improves access to school-based and external mental health resources. By implementing data-driven strategies and sustainable policy changes, this project aims to create an equitable, replicable model that enhances special education practices, fosters inclusive support systems, and improves long-term student outcomes.
