Abstract
While federal guidelines and evidence-based practices related to student engagement and family involvement in the transition IEP process exist, the School District of Byer County faces challenges in providing transition-related information to students and their families and ensuring consistent practices across schools. Currently, student participation in their IEPs is inconsistent and often reliant on parental awareness, and the incorporation of self-advocacy instruction lacks uniformity and standardization across schools. Moreover, less than three-fourths of families report receiving mandated transition information, indicating a gap between requirements and implementation.
Subsequently, this paper proposes initiatives aimed at enhancing transition services and seeks to improve student and family engagement by addressing the lack of standardized procedures for involving families and students in the transition process. By focusing on consistent provision of information through psychoeducation to relevant educators involved in the transition IEP process, families of transition-age students with disabilities, and students themselves, this project aims to bridge the gap between statutory mandates and practical implementation, thereby fostering more effective transition services for students with disabilities. The goal is utilizing evidence-based supports to increase engagement for students with IEPs and their families, resulting in increased student attendance and participation at their IEP meetings, which may subsequently improve lifelong outcomes for these students.
