Abstract
Currently, mental health is one of the most underused services in healthcare, particularly in underrepresented minority communities. A barrier can be contributed to a lack of cultural awareness. Cultural awareness is a set of interpersonal skills that allow health professionals to be cognizant of different backgrounds and provide culturally appropriate services to diverse populations. Evidence has shown that discrimination has led to the reduced use of healthcare services. The purpose of this study is to assess patients’ cultural behaviors to enhance diagnostic validity in a mental healthcare space. Failing to improve cultural awareness will inevitably lead to poorer health outcomes.
