Abstract

Mental illness is a public health crisis. No other public health crisis is as widespread or contributes to the burden of illness in the United States. In addition, our mental health can have lasting impacts on our physical health. Some of the physical impacts of mental disorders include poor digestive sleep and heart health as well as reduced energy. Increasing awareness of mental disorders and effectiveness of treatment, removing the stigma of treatment, and improving access to mental services for all people are critical. These interventions can reduce the effects of mental health on our society and must be prioritized in our public health systems.
