Abstract

Despite the extraordinary successes of modern medicine, many people choose to practice methods of alternative medicine over those of modern medicine. In many cultures, alternative medicine is a revered tradition that has been practiced for thousands of years. A sizable sector of the Western population, however, is turning toward alternative medicine as a substitute for modern medicine. The goal of my project is to explore what alternative medicine is, who chooses to practice it and why, what about it causing resistance to modern medicine, why it is becoming increasingly popular in the West, and in what ways its popularity is harmful.
