Abstract

Chloe is practicing veterinary social work at her internship MedVet. The implementation of social work at a veterinary hospital bridges the gap between healthcare providers and pet owners. The services Chloe provides through her internship include grief support, fast paced client interventions, assistance with quality-of-life decisions, referrals to community needs, de-escalating crises, staff debriefing, and advocating for pet owners. This internship has educated her about the inequality and discrimination of veterinary care within Chicago. This knowledge allows her to implement social justice and human rights throughout her client interactions. The skills learned at this internship site will be applicable to future social work positions that Chloe will have. Since this internship relates to her classwork, she has been able to apply social work theories in real life settings. Chloe has also had the privilege to witness veterinary medicine in practice; her experience here has displayed how social work can be implemented into nontraditional settings.
