Abstract
Previous investigation of the function of Phosducin-like Protein 3 (PhLP-3) in P. berghei confirmed that this small cytosolic protein plays an essential role in the survival of the protozoan parasite. I optimized the protein purification protocol of the thioredoxin domain of the protein to investigate its structure. After determining that the structure and redox activity of this protein is highly conserved across all investigated eukaryotes, I wished to investigate the importance of PhLP-3 in multicellular organisms. Knowing that PhLP-3 is highly expressed in the germline of D. melanogaster, I hypothesized that this protein might be essential for germline development.
