Abstract
Racial disparities in exclusionary discipline has been an ongoing issue in the field of education. This is of great concern given the poor long-term outcomes associated with in- and out-of-school suspensions and expulsions. This capstone focuses on identifying a problem of practice within a middle school setting and using research to identify its social justice impact. Through the integration of restorative justice practices and implicit bias trainings within a school-wide positive behavior interventions and supports program, the author promotes greater equity in school discipline. The author also describes an implementation plan in which implementation science is used to successfully implement change efforts while sustaining the change effort over a long period of time.
