Abstract

My summer Engaged Learning opportunity brought me to the Illinois State Police Forensic Science Center - Chicago. As a toxicology intern, I was able to learn more about a subsection that I was previously unfamiliar with, as well as tour the other sections of forensics. As a participant in the internship program with the ISP, I was required to complete a research project within the section of toxicology. Over the course of 4 weeks, I looked at how blood alcohol levels were affected when stored in blood tubes with different types of chemical additives that are used to preserve samples in different ways. Research like this can help determine the best ways for storing biological evidence to better maintain their integrity over longer periods of time. This opportunity has helped me solidify my decision to pursue a career in forensics and learn about its aspects in a professional setting.
